Nature of the Agent

To this day MAFF do not know the nature of the agent. Who knows? This question has to be answered: is the agent Chemical or Biological?

My hypothesis is that the infective agent is a virus with a single stranded DNA, with a simple structure, which is resistant to inactivation by heat and chemical procedures.

A lot of evidence given to the BSE Inquiry by various witnesses was in fact without any hard evidence that a protein "prion" was the agent. Although it was very obvious to them that, Prusiner's group, following a number of experiments had concluded that another "X" protein, other than prion, is required in the post translational process (Telling et al. Cell 83:79-90, 1995), as previously suggested by myself (Narang Res Virol 143:381-386, 1992). All this evidence points that a prion or any other protein is not the real agent. Scientists, who followed the prion theory, were rewarded by the government who funded their research. Five years on MAFF and those funded by MAFF or MRC still do not know or do not want to admit that the agent that causes BSE/CJD is a virus.

The final conclusion of these findings suggests that the prion protein itself is not the agent and therefore it is something else. Moreover, Prusiner's work has proved not to be reputable (Balter M. Prions: A lone killer or a vital accomplice? Science 286:660-662, 1999) and the protein only hypothesis has no direct evidence to support it. On the contrary, in fact most of the new evidence supports a virus hypothesis. Now Prusiner has openly admitted after six years, the phenomena of interference between the two strains of the agent. It further suggests that the BSE agent could not be a protein after all. I MAFF and PHLS have ignored my findings for over 10 years.

I have published a large number of papers supporting the hypothesis that the BSE/CJD agent is a virus. Prusiner has ignored these references. More recently, I transmitted the disease using isolated single stranded DNA ­ in demonstration of Kock's postulate ­ that a single stranded DNA genome is the viral genome for the disease of BSE/CJD (Narang HK. Evidence that single-stranded DNA wrapped around the tubulofilamentous particles "Nemavirus" is the genome of the scrapie agent (Res Virol 149:375-382, 1998).
