A century ago my grandfather led a gang of slaughtermen burning foot and mouth infected cattle along the Scottish borders. Escaping charges of selling the meat he lost his teeth from eating it, nothing changes.

My father realising authorities condoned feeding dead diseased cattle to cattle and other farm animals in factory sheds along with antibiotics, declared, ‘God and nature will not be mocked’.

As a young butcher, I believed it was progress till I began to see the outcome and realised the old man was not so daft. Serving as a boy seaman during the war, I have been in the meat industry here and in North America most of my 73 years.

In 1956 as a paid up member of the Meat Cutters Union Chicago Local I returned to the UK with a few hundred pounds to start a butchery shop developing into supplying restaurants with £1M of meat p.a. Expanding into processing seafood import and export establishing offices around the world.

I opposed the legalisation of Nuclear Irradiation of food to conceal sewage contamination of food. Mr. Gummer called me a food fascist. I had no idea of the value of the P.R, because of support for clean wholesome food; sales grew to £50M per annum.

Dr. David Clark, MP Shadow Minister of Agriculture in 1990 knowing of my involvement in Parents for Safe Food, introduced me to Dr. Harash Narang explaining although he had developed a post-mortem test for BSE/CJD and scrapie in co-operation with Dr. Carlton Gajdusek, Nobel Prize Winner. Dr. Narang’s employers, the Public Health Laboratories Service (PHLS), refused to allow validation of his test or let him carry on further research with BSE and CJD.

As now it appears from the BSE enquiry, the health minister Mr Stephen Dorrell responsible for PHLS did not wish the PHLS to work or be seen to work with BSE and CJD.Dr. Narang’s scientific publications in the International Journals on SE’s impressed me. Denied funding to produce a live test using urine for BSE/CJD by searching for the DNA of the agent or protein was the way forward. This, along with his post-mortem test, would have resolved the BSE problem before it spread.

I offered £20,000 for validation of his test for MAFF’s benefit. His Director, Dr. Lightfoot, accepted money and MAFF agreed to supply 10 brains for validation. Months passed, nothing happened. Questions were asked in the House of Commons by Dr. Clark and specimens were supplied over a few months for work that could have been done in an afternoon.

MAFF reported three positives out of five and five negatives out of five, i.e. 80% correct first time but rejected the test. MAFF’s record obviously revealed the dates Dr. Narang signed for the specimens, which were not supplied on those dates recorded by MAFF, they appear to have been mixed up.

The PHLS tried to block his evidence of the link between BSE/CJD before the Parliamentary Committee in 1990. PHLS suspended Dr. Narang whilst Dr. Lightfoot destroyed the evidence by killing the experimental animals. Luckily Dr. Narang was able to repeat his work to develop a live urine test.

Dr. Lightfoot refused to register the laboratory for genetic manipulation work and later admitted to a newspaper "you must realise this is very political".

Five years ago, Dr. Narang diagnosed Peter Hall, Jean Wake and many others in a cluster by his urine test while they were still alive. All died after being infected with the BSE agent. This evidence was published in Night and Day, Mail on Sunday 17 December 1995 by Peter Martin, which forced Mr. Dorrell the Health Minister, three months later to admit the Link of BSE with CJD in March 1996.

Each successive minister promised that MAFF would provide urine from BSE positive and negative cattle for the urine test. MRC funded Leeds £200,000 for validation of Dr. Narang’s live urine test but failed to organise specimen supply whilst the equipment bought for this purpose has been collecting dust.

As Dr Goebells said, "you don't have to tell lies, just make sure no one is allowed to tell the truth."

It is tragic to watch the plight of farmers seeing their livestock destroyed in anything but humain conditions while MAFF use Racial Prejudice and smears to divert their own guilt for this disaster onto the Chinese Community, where is the evidence? Why or how would they smuggle beef into the UK?

As a major supplier of Quality beef and seafood to Chinese outlets in the North of England and all of Scotland. I welcome anyone to inspect the rigid health certificates of origin and inspection etc... of the beef we sell imported by others from outside the EEC and so guaranteed free from BSE!CJD. Supplied to the USA and other strict health standard countries who don't have problems with Foot and Mouth. I will sell British Beef again only when MAFF agree to use Dr Narang's urine test I funded to guarantee its safety from infecting our young people with BSE/CJD.

Investigating this outbreak Dr Narang interviewed the tragic scape goat pig farmer Bobby Waugh he reported a visit around the 25th January by MAFF vets who inspected 3 or 4 of his pig pens. Surprisingly or not these were the only pig pens to develop Foot and Mouth disease to begin with, MAFF inspectors also inquired where they could purchase logs long before any reported Foot and Mouth disease. There are rumours of an outbreak in Galloway not reported where all the lambs aborted. MAFF admit using a live Foot and Mouth virus to test a live vaccine (instead of a dead one) in at least 3 farms over the last few months, do not deny it is the same '0' type virus that is devastating the farming industry across the country. I suggest like BSE/CJD this is another disaster we can put down to the ignorance of Government Rent a Professor who replace the real experts like Dr Narang.
