BSE in other animals

In 1996, a Kent farmer in South of England having witnessed BSE on his farm, noticed that one of his 30 month old domestic hens showed similar clinical signs to those seen in BSE cattle. First signs were behaviour changes, having difficulty to enter its roosting shed. As the clinical signs progressed, imbalance, incoordination, and ataxia became well marked (2). Further, two other farmers on separate farms, one in the south of the UK, and one in Northumberland reported similar cases in hens. Histopathological examination of brains revealed reactive astrocytes with minimal vacuolation. However, immunostaining of the brain sections with PrP antibody, revealed typical PrPsc positive plaques (Fig 1).
